A live sports broadcast in Las Vegas starts long before the anthem. By the time a stadium's compound goes green for air, a crew has already spent the better part of a day running cable, mounting cameras, and testing a signal path back to the network truck. The broadcast itself might last three hours. Getting to that first shot takes most of the day before it.
What time does a sports broadcast crew actually show up?
For a night game, call time is usually six to eight hours before kickoff. That sounds early until you break down what has to happen before a single camera is live: credentials get picked up, gear gets rolled in through a specific dock, positions get staked out, and every camera has to be run, tested, and confirmed working with the truck before the pregame show even starts. We worked exactly this kind of timeline for NFL Network's coverage of Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium, where a five-camera package had to be fully built, cabled, and confirmed on fiber well ahead of air.
Rush jobs happen too — a network needs a same-day add for a sideline reporter package, or a last-minute credential comes through for an extra iso camera. Those get built the same way, just compressed. The steps don't change; the clock does.
Where do camera operators actually stand?
Every position on a sports broadcast has a job description before it has an operator. A hard camera on the wide shot holds the master angle the director cuts back to. Sideline operators chase the ball and the reaction shots the wide camera can't get. Iso cameras sit on a single player, coach, or bench for isolated footage the truck can pull later. On a bigger show, positions might include:
- A hard camera for the primary wide angle
- One or two sideline handheld or shoulder-mount cameras
- Iso cameras on specific players, coaches, or benches
- A robotic or fixed camera for an angle a human operator can't hold for three hours
- A tunnel or entrance camera for player walk-ins

How does the signal actually get from the stadium to the network?
This is the part viewers never think about and producers never stop thinking about. Camera feeds have to get from the field to a truck, and from that truck to the network — often across the country — with no visible delay and no dropped frames. We run this over fiber where it's available, which is the most stable path for a big broadcast, and over TVU bonded-cellular transmission when a shot needs to move or fiber isn't run to a position. What matters to a producer isn't the acronym — it's whether the feed holds. A dropped signal during a live shot is the one mistake a broadcast crew doesn't get to fix on the fly, so redundancy gets built in wherever the budget allows: a backup transmission path, a second engineer watching signal strength, spare cable runs already in place before anyone needs them.
How does the crew coordinate with the network truck?
Every operator is wired into a comms system — usually an IFB or party-line intercom — so the truck's director can call shots, ask for a specific angle, or flag a problem in real time. A technical director in the truck is switching between however many feeds are live; a producer is calling the show; and camera operators are listening for their number to get called while still tracking the play in front of them. It's a genuinely different skill than single-camera work, which is part of why we treat multi-cam crewing differently from a standard ENG booking — the coordination layer is its own discipline.
What happens after the broadcast ends?
Strike is its own project. Cable gets coiled and logged, cameras come down in reverse order from how they went up, and gear gets checked back into cases before it leaves the building. On a stadium show, load-out can take nearly as long as load-in, especially if a truck or another production needs the same dock later that night. Nobody sees this part of the day either, but skipping it is how gear gets damaged or left behind.
